In 1992 we launched the ADOPT-A-BEACH scheme to encourage people to get to know their local beach keeping an eye on it regularly, to see if there is life on it, to check if the sea water is clean enought to support its creature and plants and to identify where garbage has come from as well as clear it away.

In 1998 we inaugurated our educatonal FRIENDS OF THE SEA Project and have established links with:

Calais, France
The South Belgian coast, Oostduinkerke to Ostend
Athens, Greece the Hellenic Marine Protection Association, HELMEPA.

Our aim is to demonstrate that the sea is part of all topics and subjects: geography, history, sciences, mathematics, literature, history, music, art, food, communications.

From photos they take themselves, like this one of a heap of an interesting variety of seaweeds
thrown up on a beach by a storm, they learn first-hand about the sea's ecology.
